Glossop Ex- Colts at the Bowden Sevens
The Glossop Ex-Colts team arrived at the 53rd Annual Bowdon Sevens Tournament in high spirits. This mood was slightly dampened when the initial groups were announced. Glossop were the first team put into group two, now known as the group of death, followed by Lymm A, Newcastle University and De La Salle.
The boys were still reeling from this unpleasant discovery and in some cases still learning the rules of Rugby Sevens when they were asked to take the field for their first fixture against Newcastle University. The game started brightly and after the first seven minutes Glossop were down by only a single try. However, the team fitness started to disintegrate in the second half and the team eventually capitulated to a better drilled squad. The next game against Lymm was written off as a learning experience before the whistle was blown and despite some ‘generous’ refereeing the Lymm squad, watched by former player Dave Strettle, were too much for the Glossop lads. The back to back fixtures of Lymm and De La Salle put paid to any remaining stamina the squad had left and Glossop finished in an inglorious, but still cheerful, 4th place.
Glossop now advanced to the Plate competition with a quarter final tie against Lymm B. The boys started brightly and kept pressure up on their opponents with some powerful offensive tackles and by far their best handling and ball work of the tournament so far. The pressure told when approaching the break, South African Sevens Specialist Matt Keating broke the Lymm line and slid over, Howarth converted and the score stood at a respectable 7-0 to Glossop at half time. It was halftime that was to be Glossop’s downfall, breaking the excellent attacking rhythm and defensive pressure that the boys had built up, Glossop returned to the pitch facing a Lymm side who had clearly had a stern telling off from their man in charge. Glossop held out valiantly but eventually the Lymm winger crossed in the corner for an unconverted try. 7–5 to Glossop.
The next score was to come from Lymm again who touched down, just before the whistle to snatch an eventual 12–7 Victory against a frankly exhausted Glossop side.
