After a strong opening period from the home side it was Glossop who broke the deadlock. Good defensive pressure saw Jon Murphy intercept and use his pace outrun the chasing Grimsby backs. So after a more than uncomfortable opening Glossop lead 0-7.
Grimsby's pressure after the score did not relent and in the end they finally made it tell, with a dynamic try bringing the scores level. After the interval Glossop made a promising start with Kit Brammer and Andy Horbatchewski making good breaks through the opposition backline, the finishing touches could not be applied.
Grimsby again ran in some further scores and the game was slipping from Glossop's grasp. Horbatchewski slotted a routine penalty to take Glossop's tally to 10 points. Glossop then had their best period of the game with sustained pressure on the Grimsby line, countless pick and drives were repelled by last solid Grimsby defence, when the ball was slung wide the glaring overlap was wasted by sloppy passing, leaving debutante Andy Gibb to rue the missed opportunity.
With Grimsby having sealed the game, the last minute saw Jon Murphy uncharacteristically knock on when he only had to gather the ball and fall over the line. This did some up the day for Glossop, the luck was not their when thy needed it, and a large portion of luck was required bacause a good Grimsby side were not willing to do the Hargate Hill men any favours.
A big hand to Alan Barth, he came to Grimsby on very, very short notice and bailed us out once again by playing in the front row.
Glossop's 2nd XV took on Bowden at home and ran out comprhensive winners with Charlie Wrigley bagging a hatful of tries in a 40 point victory, taking them to third in the league. The 3rd team fell to their first defeat of the season.
