1's Make Game In Hand Count

Glossop 1XV...44 Oakham 1st XV...3

This game was one that Glossop expected to win, but it was clear that both coach Adam Waters and Captain Kit Brammer wanted a performance without complacency. After a slow start the Hargate Hill men moved into top gear and quickly racked up a 12 point lead after excellent work by the forwards gave the Glossop backs the chance to open up. Wingers Cassell and Harrison bagged a try apiece and Horbatchewskji added a conversion. With the experienced head of Andy Sales orchestrating chaos in Oakhams midfield defence it was only a matter of time before Glossop scored further points. Fullback John Murphy scored out wide with outside centre Lee Pickerell delivering a long, beautifully weighted pass. Oakham were quick to remind the home side that they were still in the game as they broke up play and forced a penalty from in font of the posts, with the wind howling Oakhams young flyhalf slotted it perfectly through the uprights. Half time closed in with Glossops dominance of the scrums and lineout's giving them a 17-3 lead.
The prematch game plan was reiterated and Glossop came out all guns firing as Sam Wilkinson charged down Oakhams fullback forcing him to concede a five metre scrum. As the decoy runners flew in Glossop's backs created a thing of beauty as fly half Andy Horbatchewskji wowed the crowd by flicking a pass out to the onrushing Murphy to finish off an easy chance. The next try came out of sheers persistence. A disrupted line out saw the ball fall on the Oakham side, Wilkinson saw the chance to punt the ball forwards and chased his kick, Oakhams covering wing let the ball squirm out of his grip and Wilkinson pounced on the loose ball to score. Horbatchewskji provided another moment of genius as he cutely stepped inside his defender and literally strolled over the line.
With the front row of Tamplin, Shirt and Barth continuing to devastate their opposite numbers in the tight and Stewart, Thompson and Clark making ground in the loose Glossop kept the pressure on their opponents. Sean Cassell clearly back to his usual form, stepped and blasted his way through several attempted tackles to dived over for a fantastic individual effort. This seemed to sum the day up for Glossop, it was a very solid team performance sprinkled with moments of sheer individual brilliance and determination.
A good home crowd saw the 2nd XV finish on the winning side as they beat Broughton Park 3's. To make it the perfect day the 3rd XV ran out the victors against Broughton Park 4ths.
