Three Wins In Four For 1st XV

Glossop…38 West Bridgeford…0

Glossop’s 1st XV continued their promising start to the new year with a 3rd victory in four. On current league positions, the two sides were evenly matched and a close encounter was expected. The first ten minutes of the game seemed to bear this out, as both sides competed fiercely for a foothold in the game. It was Glossop, however, who managed to carve out the first score of the match. Some good scrummage work by the home forwards gave Rob Stewart the opportunity to break forward, this momentum was capitalised on as Dave Shirt blasted over from short range next to the posts, and the conversion was made by Horbatchewskyj, 7-0. Glossop’s second was not long coming as John Murphy returned a clearance kick right into the heart of the Bridgford rearguard, he somehow evaded all the attempted tackles and ran in for the try, the extras were added taking the score to 14-0. From this position Glossop had to avoid any complacency. West Bridgford continued to battle hard and they were rewarded with a penalty after a series of infringements on deck by Glossop’s forwards, the attempt was missed as the half time whistle drew near. Glossop had one last opportunity to score as the front five crushed the opposition scrum and Captain Kit Brammer leapt over to push Glossop further in front.

The second half began in much the same fashion with the Nottingham side making mistakes and being punished. Good pressure from fly half Horbatchewskyj saw him charge down the fullbacks kick, he deftly scooped the ball off the ground at pace and ran in untouched. Glossop’s forward dominance was again beginning to weigh heavily on Bridgford shoulders as more pressure was exerted from the scrum. Wilkinson poked the loose ball forward and Brammer won the chase to score his second of the day. With Pickerell pulling the strings at outside centre his pass unleashed Cassell on the win to run in his fourth try in as many games. The front five of Shirt, Tamplin, Howard, Thompson and Clark functioned perfectly once again for a Glossop side which is taking shape nicely for the remainder of the season. Next weekend sees Lincolnshire outfit Sleaford come to Hargate Hill and Glossop will be looking to avenge their defeat earlier in the season.
