Landmark Away Win

Lincoln…18 Glossop…23

Glossop’s first fifteen recorded their third away win of the season with a hard fought victory over a team they have always struggled to beat on the road. A strong wind blew the length of the field, and just as last week Glossop played with it in the first half. The opening score of the day went to Glossop. Some over zealous footwork from Lincolns amply built prop saw him sin binned with the resulting penalty sailing easily through the uprights.

It wasn’t long before Glossop’s front five began to assert considerable pressure in the scrum. From this platform the backline worked a nice move which saw Horbatchewskyj break the line and lob a pass out to Stanford who dived over. After adding the extras the score was looking healthy for Glossop, who were leading 10-0. Lincoln, however, replied in typically stubborn fashion with a wonderfully cheeky effort. Glossop’s defence was set well with no overlap out wide for Lincoln to exploit; a deft chip over the top with speedy chase took the score to 5-10.

Realising the need for points whilst playing with the wind in their favour, Glossop ploughed on down field. After couple of missed attempts, goal kicker Horbatchewskyj made no mistake with the third stretching Glossop’s lead by three points. As the first half drew on it was looking less and less likely that Glossop’s dominance in the scrums was going to be used to full advantage. Secure ball gave young scrum half Chris Sonczak the opportunity to float a pin perfect pass out to Brammer who offloaded in the tackle to Murphy to run in. At the break Glossop hade amassed 18 points and conceded 5 in reply. The real work was still to be done.

Glossop started the second half superbly by pinning Lincoln back deep inside their own half of the field. Just as it seemed Glossop may score at one end of the field Lincoln pounced at the other. The home team constructed a flowing backs move to leave an overlap on the wing, running the try in from distance and touching down in the corner, 10-18. This seemed like a familiar pattern for those more senior players who have seen Glossop capitulate all too often in the second half at Lincoln.

Glossop’s response to this score could not have been better. The away side surged forward from the restart and after gaining good field position dealt a killer blow to Lincoln’s hopes of victory. After Horbatchewskyj and Thompson gained yards the ball went wide to Clark who used Harrison as a dummy runner whilst sprinting in to score. With Glossop now thirteen points ahead it needed two converted tries for Lincoln to win. They pulled back three points but could not break Glossop down as Morris and Barnes hauled down runner after runner. The final play of the game put one of the many burley runners Lincoln had in their backline to blast through and score, the missed conversion attempt was followed by the final whistle. Jubilant coach Adam Waters congratulated his players on “taking it right to them” throughout.
